York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills Book 7--Indentures 24 March 1684/5 This Indenture wittnesseth That Samuel Bond of the Parrish of Hampton in the County of York in Virginia of his owne free will and with the Consent of William Wade his Guardian doth putt himselfe an Apprentice unto Benjamin Brock of the Parrish of Denbie in the County of Warwick aforesd. in Virginia Carpenter and to learne the Arte and Science of a Wheelewright & alsoe a turner and with him after the manner of an Apprentice to dwell and serve from the feast of Christs birth next ensueing after the date of these prsents to the full and due tearme of five yeares from thence next ensueing and to be fully Compleat and ended and by all which tearme of time the sd Apprentice the sd Benjamine Brock well well and truely shall serve, his secretts shall keepe close his Commandements lawfull and honest he shall every where gladly doe, hurt to his said Master he shall not doe, or suffer to be done to the vallue of twelve pence in the yeare, but shall lett if he may or cann or imediately to give warneing to his sd. Master thereof; the goods of his sd. Master he shall not inordi- nately wast nor to them to any one lend wthout the lysence of his said Master at Cards or dice or at any other unlawfull game he shall not play whereby his Master may incur any hurt fornication in the house of his sd. Master nor elsewhere he shall not committ Matrimonie he shall not contract Tavernes he shall not frequent with his owne proper goods or any others dureing the said tearme wthout the speciall lysence of his said Master he shall not absent himselfe from his sd: Masters service day or night, nor delay the business of his said Master But in all things to behave himselfe as a good and faithfull Apprentice towards his sd. Master and Mistress and all this dureing the tearme aforesd. And the said Ben -jamine Brock doe covenant to and with his sd. Apprentice to use his best endeavor at all times to teach and instruct him in the afores Arts and Sciences or to cause him to be well and truely taught and instructed in the aforementioned Artes And alsoe to finde & to allowe to his aforesd. Apprentice sufficient meat drinck wash -ing Lodgeing and apparrell for and dureing the sd tearme aforesd. as shall be fitting for such an Apprentice Alsoe the sd. Benjamine Brock doth Covenant to and with his sd. Apprentice that he shall not be putt to worke in the ground at any manner of plantation work helpeing to make Indian Corne onely Except ed if need shall require for and dureing the sd. tearme And at the end and Expira -tion of the sd. tearme Benjamine Brock doth hereby Covenant & promise to give him his sd. Apprentice a good sufficient sett of tooles for a wheelwright and alsoe one Kersey Suite & one Searge Suite of Apparrell one new hatt two paire of shooes and stockins with one new doulase shirt and two new blew shirts It being hereby Covenanted Concluded and agreed upon by and be -tweene the sd. William Wade Guardian of the sd. Samuell Bond and the said Benjamine Brock that the sd. Apprentice shall be soe cloathed and sett out at the entrance into his sd. Apprenticeship with the sd. Benjamine Brock & if the sd. Benjamine Brock shall happen to dye before the sd Apprentice shall have served halfe his time that then he shall be free save- ing onely the same Cloathes he came in to his said Master and and if have served above halfe his time before his sd. Master shall dye he shall have a sett of tooles as before mentioned at his freedome but the same Cloathes he came in to his said Master And further the sd. Benjamine Brock doth promise to teach or in- struct or cause him to be taught or instructed within the tearme to wright and alsoe in Arethmatick sufficient to doe his owne business and at the end and Expiration of the sd. tearme to Cloath him as before mentioned In wittness whereof wee have thereunto sett or. hands and seales this 24th: day of March 1684/5. Wade March ye 24th: 1684/5 Acknowledged in York County Court by the parties subscribed & recorded Test E Jennings Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (7) 60-61 24 March 1684/5 Mr. Jenings I would desyr you to Record It as followth Whereas William a Malatto boy Sonn of Katharine Jewell is bound to me by a Certaine Indenture beareing date the 6th: of March 1670 for the tearme & time of Thirty Yeares In Consideration whereof I am to give him his bringing up and Corne & Cloathes at the Expiration of his time and a heifer of a yeare old when he attaines to the Age of fowerteen about which age he is now I doe therefore acknowledge to have marked a pied Yeareling with a figure of three under the right Eare haveing browne Eares & a browne Mussell her & her Increase to run and be for the use and behoofe of the sd Malattoe boy & him onely Serveing out his full time according to the sd. Indenture otherwise to returne to me & this I doe acknowledge to the Records of York County Given under my hand this 23d March 1684/5 Wm Booth For mr Edmd. Day of December in the first Yeare of the Raigne of or. Soveraigne Lord King James the second by the Grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland Defender of the faith &c Anno Domini 1685 Betweene George Hog of York County of the one part Sawyer and James Lucas and Ellen his wife of the same County aforesaid of the other part Wittnesseth That the sd. James Lucas his wife for diverse good reasons and Considerations herein after expressed Have Covenanted granted and agreed to and with him the sd. George Hogg in manner and forme following (Vizt) That the sd. James Lucas & Ellen his wife will duely truely peaceably and quietly serve him the sd. George hog his Executors. Administrators. &c. the full tearme & time of three yeares next ensueing the Date hereof and fully to be compleat and ended in any manner of Service or Imployment that he the sd. Hog shall Imploy them the sd. James Lucas and Ellen his wife in or about In Consideration whereof he the sd. Hog doth Covenant promise and agree to and with them the sd. James Lucas & Ellen his wife to finde and allow them Convenient and necessarie Meat Drinck washing Lodgeing and Cloatheing and other Necessaries accoarding to the custome of the Country for themselves and alsoe for the Child they now have and what Children more they shall have for and dureing the tearme and time of three Yeares before mentioned And the sd: George Hog doth further Covenant and agree to and with him the sd: James Lucas to teach and Instruct him in the tearme aforesaid the Art of a Sawyer to the best of his skill and Knowledge that he the said Lucas is able to apprehend and attaine unto he useing his ut- most endeavour to Learne the sd Trade of a Sawyer And It is further agreed upon by and between them the sd: George Hog and James and Ellen Lucas That in Case of Nonpformance of the Covenants and A- greements aforementioned or If in Case that they the sd. James and Ellen Lucas or either of them doe run away or refuse or neglect the Imployment & work of him the sd. Hog that then they doe consent & agree yt: he the sd. Hog shall have their now Child for one & twentie Yeares service And further they the sd: James & Ellen Lucas doe Covenant promise & agree duely & truly to serve him the sd. Hog his Executors. Robert Thorne his Executors. and Assignes from the Day of the date hereof untill his first and next Arrivall in Virginia and after for and dureing the tearme of fower Yeares to serve in such service and Imployment he the said Robert Thorne or his Assignes shall there Imploy him accoarding to the Custome of the Country In consideration whereof the sd Robert Thorne doth hereby covenant and grant to finde and allow meat Drinck appll & Lodgeing with other necessaries dureing the said Tearme and at the End of the sd. Tearme to pay unto him accoarding to the Custome of the Country in Such Cases In wittness whereof the parties above- mentioned to these Indentures have enterchangeably sett their hands and seales the day and Yeare above written his Henry X Gray (seale) marke Sealed and Delivered in the prsence of Edwd. West was paid by the said Bancks for the said Mackerill in goods and that the said Mackerill did acknow- ledge that he was a Servant for soe long a time And further this Depont. Sayth not Signed Wm W Aspinell Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (7) 160. 24 March 1685/6 Thomas Charnock aged one and Twenty Yeares or thereaboutes deposeth as followeth That he this Depont: saw John Bancks buy of William West of Charles County in the province of Mary Land one Henry Mack- erill for the tearme of five Yeares & that the said West was paid in by the said Bancks for the said Servant in goods and that the said Ser- vant did acknowledge that he was a Servant for soe long a time and further this Depont: Sayth not Signed Thomas T.
